Introducing, Fieffer!

Fieffer is a tortoiseshell dutch rabbit that we adopted from the humane society this past Sunday. He was a "stray" meaning someone threw him out to survive on his own and somebody else called the humane society to come get him.

Max has been obsessing over rabbits for awhile and considering how poorly the dog thing was going, I was willing to think about the possibility. We made an appointment for me and Max to go talk to the rabbit specialist volunteers at the humane society on Saturday about how to care for a rabbit and spent an hour and a half learning and visiting with all the bunnies there. Max fell in love with Fieffer on sight.

We took the whole family back and adopted him. At the end of the day, Max told me the best part of the day was when we took him out of his cage, put him in the carrier and brought him to his nice, cozy home. Although, he has been concerned about another bunny that we left there and I had to re-assure him that she would get her very own family. He is also concerned about his bunny dying, which has been very sad, but I think we've convinced him that it will be awhile before that will happen.

Fieffer, is hilarious. He throws a ball around, leaps onto things and LOVES to be pet. He will come up and lay next to you, flatten his head out and just zone while you pet him forever. He will even give you a nudge if you stop too soon. He is also doing very well with his litterbox. He has awhile before he will be allowed to roam freely about the house, but so far on his excursions he has returned to his cage to use the box and then gone back to snooping around.

He also seems to like Max. Max sat near him while he ate his breakfast and Fieffer decided that he would eat too. I found out later that this is pretty common for them to do if they like you, he will even start to groom if you pretend to groom yourself. Every night before bed, Max gives him a special treat and tonight Fieffer took it directly from his hand, which just made Max so very happy.

The cats.....Anubis and Poster are scared to death of him, Emma thinks he's pretty neat. She sat right next to him immediately after bringing him home and has met him nose to nose through the gate. At first Fieffer was a bit nervous and thumped at them, but I swear that he has been actively looking for Emma today. Apparently, cats and rabbits can get along quite well and even become very friendly.
